1 deck, arch cargo hold construction, hatches @ 24’, oil-fired boilers, steam turbine engine, 9000 SHP

Upper Lakes Shipping Ltd., Toronto ON (home port Toronto ON)

Entered service July 1965

Sold 1983 for off-Lakes service and left the Great Lakes

Renamed Thornhill (Vanuatu) 1983 and Alkalli Seri (Mexico) 1984

Sold for scrap 1987.  Arrived Kaohsiung Taiwan June 9, 1987 for scrapping.

  1. i wish to know the names of the crew for the ontario power. also the positions they held in 1966 and 67.
    i often saw her in my port in sydney ns.

    • I sailed on her as a cadet officer, 4th mate, and 3rd mate in 1971. The captain was George Davies. 2nd Mate was Walter Davis. Chief officer was also last name of Davis. He would have been the captain in 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970 etc. Her sister ship was the SS Cape Breton Miner. There was a brief period that the Ontario Power was chartered offshore prior to 1971. During that time she grounded and suffered a hole in the # 3 port wing tank. It could have been #4 wing tank. The cape breton minor was also chartered offshore for a longer period of time.
