  1. Arthur,
I have a picture of the upper deck area and possibly one of it from a distance, at the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, dated June 1948.
I’m going through my mother’s pictures and she has these from a trip to the locks when she was 17 years old. There’s a close-up of the name so I thought I’d research it to see if it was still in operation and was directed here.
I can email the pictures to you if you’re interested.

  2. I sailed on the Hatfield from fit out to lay up in 1955 for Capt. C. J. (Pat) Paver. Sailed with Capt. Paver for two more seasons on two different boats, the Thomas and the Stanley.

  3. Yes … I sailed with a an AB Walter Gatz on various U.S. ships,ie Percival Roberts Jr, Ste Tremble, and of course the Str Hatfield. Does anyone recall this man? This would be 1968 thu 70 seasons. e-mail stanmyrna54@gmail,com P.S , not an easy guy to get along with, but fun to work with!

  4. During the summer of 1969 I was a deckhand on the Joshua A. Hatfield. I have many memories from that summer, some good and some not so good. I remember one person in particular. They called him animal. Someone you did not want to get mad. I believe I was entertainment for the regulars since they teased me a lot and protected me at the same time. I was 120 pounds and a student at Penn State University. It is amazing that I survived since I did not understand the dangers that I volunteered for. On one occasion during a storm, waves were going over the ship and the captain asked for volunteers to clamp down the steel plates. Me and another deckhand clamped the entire ship during the storm. Afterwards they informed me that many had been swept overboard trying to do it.
