My father sailed briefly on the John W. Gates but he remembers the spelling of the last name to be Goetz. Just thought you would like to check to see if there is a discrepency in the spelling.
Nope, she was always the John W. Gates. Gates was the head of American Steel and Wire, the barbed wire company, which became a part of U. S. Steel.
