Foundered Oct 3, 1904 ten miles northeast of Point Aux Barques MI, Lake Huron. Enroute to Fort William ON with cargo of coal towing barge Iron Cliff, broke steam pipe while crossing Saginaw Bay in heavy sea and sank. Barge cut loose and sailed to Alpena MI. Iron Chief taken in tow by str. Andrew Carnegie and sailed toward shallow water but tow line broke and vessel sank. Enrollment surrendered Oct 14, 1904.
