Keel laid Jan 21, 1959;  launched Sept  17, 1959
Longest vessel on the Great Lakes when launched and entered service (Arthur B. Homer, Edward L. Ryerson and Red Wing entered service later in the 1960 season at the same dimensions – superseded Edmund Fitzgerald of 1958).  These became the maximum allowable dimensions for vessels using the St. Lawrence Seaway and many vessels were built at these dimensions in succeeding years.

Repowered 1986 with diesel engine

Laid up Dec 4, 1996 at Montreal QC and did not operate again

Sold 2002 to Lower Lakes Towing Ltd. and towed to Port Colborne ON, where her diesel engine was removed for installation in the fleet’s str. Saginaw.  Resold for scrap to International Marine Salvage, Port Colborne and scrapped there.

  1. We need ship a cellular container vessel of capacity between 1700teus to 2000teus not older than 1995 on time charter for 6+6 or 1+1.
    Our trade area # China, UAE, INDIA, TURKEY, Libya, Malaysia
    Delivery and redelivery # China
    OR MPP required who can carry containers as same above mention details.
    For purchase,
    We need to buy small container ship of capacity around 350teus to 400teus with budget range around 1.5 m usd not older than 1990.
    We are direct charterer/owner not a broker.

  2. I saw this ship launched. It was a sideways launch and when she hit the water the wave flowed over the yard and Highway 26. We all cut school that morning including the teachers.

    If I remember correctly she followed by the Carol Lake and they were the last large ships built there. I believe that there were a couple of ice breakers launched and then the yards closed.
