Upper Lakes Shipping Ltd., Toronto ON (home port Toronto ON)

Entered service June 20, 1959

Laid up Dec 20, 1981 at Toronto ON and did not operate again until late 1986.

Laid up Dec 22, 1999 at Toronto ON and did not operate again

Sold for scrap 2003 to Indian shipbreakers.  Cleared Quebec QC Oct 18, 2003 with str. Oakglen towed by tug Seaways 5.  Tow arrived Alang India Feb 11, 2004 via Cape of Good Hope.  (Rounding Cape Town the vessel began leaking and constant pumping out was required to reach her destination.)

  1. When in grade school in thr mid 60s our class went to Toronto and took a full tour of this ship. I was impressed at 11 years old. Now at age 63 I wondered what happened to her. Thanks for the great info.

  2. My first ship in 1980 [Captain Mac Penney], before spending nearly 39 years with the Canadian Coast Guard.

    While she was laid up in Toronto, she was used for filming of the David Mamet movie ‘Lakeboat’ which portrayed the playwright/screenwriter’s younger days on a Great Lakes bulk carrier.
    A great film for anyone who has spent time on a laker.
